The SWLStG pharmacy team have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Pharmacy Technician to join our friendly department and hold a leading position in providing medicines management services to our inpatient mental health teams. Our pharmacy currently operates Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and does not open on weekends, bank holidays or have late duty shifts.
The postholder will manage the medicines management technicians for the safe management of medicines on wards and in teams. You will also act as the Education Supervisor for Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians (PTPTs) and a practice supervisor for trainees in the team. You will operationalise the training of staff in wards based activities including medicines reconciliation, counselling of medicines, checking of patient own medicines and medicines supply.
You must be a GPhC registered Pharmacy Technician, accreditations for both Medicine Optimisation (MOPT) and Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) are essential; along with experience of providing education and training and staff management.
You will need to be adaptable to new situations, conscientious, have a good attention to detail, excellent communication skills and be able to work alone and as well as part of a team prioritising the workload to ensure the needs of the patients, service and pharmacy are met in a timely manner.
You will lead on the provision of pharmacy medicines management services and provide support to the pharmacy technicians and pharmacists, provide operational support where required, provide a clinical pharmacy service to inpatient wards and work with the multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of a safe and effective service to our patients. This includes the delivery of education & training sessions to our pharmacy and multidisciplinary team colleagues.
You will have a particular role in implementing and monitoring the clinical pharmacy standards and working closely with the Pharmacy Leadership Team to identify service gaps. You will be responsible for areas of service and line management of pharmacy technician(s) and PTPT(s). You will also be involved in co-ordinating, undertaking, developing and presenting of reports on audits and projects to evaluate and improve services alongside pharmacy and trust priorities and objectives.

Springfield University Hospital, Tooting
Our largest, 19-ward site is in Springfield Village, created following our £150m investment into two new world class mental health facilities. A 32-acre public park, shops and cafes are coming soon. Close to shops, cafes and Tooting Bec on the Northern Line plus Earlsfield and Tooting rail stations and bus routes.
• To collaborate with senior pharmacists and senior technicians in the development and implementation of effective medicines management systems.
• To be responsible for or contribute to the development, implementation, updating and monitoring of relevant pharmacy & trust policies & procedures.
• To assist with the review and modernisation of pharmacy services by identifying opportunities for pharmacy technicians.
• To contribute to the development of pharmacy technical services through Pharmacy Technician meetings.
• To implement the Medicines Optimisation model for technicians, at community level.
• To work in close liaison with the dispensary.
• To contribute to the development and updating of pharmacy standard operating procedures.
• To monitor and supervise the work of the pharmacy assistants and technicians in medication top-up at community level, to ensure good stock control.
• To monitor medicines storage at team bases and outside units in line with Medicines Management standards.
• To assist with departmental and Trust wide quality audits to demonstrate compliance with Medicines Management policies.
• To provide general supervision and appraisal of pharmacy assistants and technicians according to departmental policy.
• To supervise the internal training scheme for pharmacy assistants/student technicians leading to NVQ Level 2/BTEC Level 3, in line with external provider guidance, and achieve Educational Supervisor status as required/appropriate.
• To dispense medication, including clinical trials, for in-, out-, day- and hostel patients ready to receive a final accuracy check.
• To participate in the medication supply and topping-up service at team base level, when required, to ensure adequate stocks are maintained for patient care.
• To participate within the pharmacy, when necessary, with the receipt, processing, storage and stock control of medicines and other supplies.
• To counsel patients attending the Community Teams and pharmacy department on the use of their medication, as appropriate.
• To maintain, Accredited Checking Technician status and perform the final accuracy check of prescriptions in accordance with department protocols
• To respond to enquiries and requests from staff, patients and carers, in accordance with individual competence and departmental policy.
• To assist in the induction of new staff, and in-house training.
• To use pharmacy and other computer systems in the course of performing these duties.
• To deputise for the Principal Medicines Optimisation Technician and the Chief Technician when required.
Management
• To be a role model for junior technicians and assistants, and actively promote the role of the pharmacy technician.
• To manage pharmacy technicians working under the clinical team, including appraisals, organising rotas, lieu and leave.
• Identify the training needs of technical staff and support their development in line with the departmental appraisal system.
• Ensure trust policies on recruitment, sickness absence, equal opportunities, Health and Safety and other national legislation are followed and understood by medicines management technicians.
• Participate in the recruitment of staff.
• Monitor and prepare regular reports detailing the pharmacy workload and medicines expenditure for services.
• Manage, through allocating roles within the technical team, to ensure efficient and effective management of the day to day workload of inpatient and outpatient clinical technician services to Trust sites. This includes liaising closely with dispensary staff, ensuring that all staff are allocated to respond to workload and ward delivery requirements.
• To be responsible for re-supplying medicines in accordance with agreed stock lists and non-stock items, in line with the changing clinical needs of each clinical environment to minimise waste and reduce risk.
• To ensure the accurate charging of medicines to teams.
• To participate in procurement of pharmaceuticals as required.
• To participate in any pharmacy related service development projects
Research and Development:
• To undertake data collection for medicines management audits within the Trust.
• To write reports for medicines management audits within the Trust
• To assist with the implementation of clinical trials as undertaken by the pharmacy department.
Training and Development
• To undertake mandatory and statutory training as required by Trust policy.
• To contribute and commit to undertaking an annual Development Review/appraisal.
• To undertake personal development as identified in the Personal Development Plan (PDP).
• To undertake CPD as required by the General Pharmaceutical Council.
• To be responsible for the induction and training on medicines management aspects of community based technical services for rotational technicians and assist in the training of rotational pharmacists in mental health.
• Prepare, update and conduct a mental health pharmacy induction programme on medicines management aspects of community based technical services, for other pharmacy staff.
